Ellen, Martha, Oprah and the world

Over the last year and especially in the few month there has been a food shift in North America.  The goddesses of daytime television, Ellen and Oprah with some help from none other than Martha Stewart are all talking about factory farming and/or veganism.  They all take slightly different approaches but they are saying the same things.

Ellen for instance has become vegan and she is showing the world how easy and enjoyable it is by bringing people like Wolfgang Puck on her show to make vegan pizza.  Oprah did something I never thought I would see on tv when she showed footage, some of it very dramatic of the conditions animals face in factory farms.  She then took it a step further and went vegan for 6 weeks on a cleansing diet.  It does not really matter that it didn’t stick with her because it took the word vegan and made it “normal” and “real” and interesting.  Just today I saw a clip of the Martha Stewart show where she interviewed the producer of the movie Food Inc. and Martha herself said we need to stop supporting factory farming.

Ten years ago when I became vegan if you said “factory farming” or even “vegan” people would look at you like you just said a word they had never heard before because they probably had not.  Today it is becoming mainstream and almost cool to think about our bodies, our planet and the origin of our food.  Cool or not I am thrilled that our culture is starting to take a good hard look at what we are eating and asking some hard questions that don’t usually have pleasant answers.  Veganism is the answer and I hope you will join me on the journey.

Did you know that the average person consumes at least 1,000 pounds of food a year.  Shocking, I know.  Choosing what constitutes your 1,000 pounds is what makes your body what it is today.  Every cell, organ and body system has been created and re-created by the by the last 1,000 pounds you consumed.  You have the chance every single day to change yourself from the inside out.  Choosing whole foods, a wide variety of fruits and veggies as well as limiting processed foods and going animal free will net you the ultimate output from the 1,000 pound input.
